I’m not gonna lie, I feel pretty darn good about myself today…
To give a bit of context, I work for an agency, whose client got caught in a big PR story: some people on The Stream got confused between this company and a movement of people striking controversial arguments. The client had nothing to do with the controversy, and I politely and democratically explained this to those who misunderstood. This was this morning.
Following my intervention, the company went on to become a national trending topic on The Stream, while the controversial movement trended globally.
Following this, we have seem some incredible responses online, of people defending the client, by sending messages of support, defending us, and acknowledging our good work. Our responses were not part of any strategy or bad publicity we were trying to fuel. Our responses were to monitor, not ‘feed the trolls’ and explain the distinction between the two entities for anyone who misinterpreted the situation.
So yeah, while we didn’t understand the scale of things from the get-go, I’m glad transparency and clear messages helped us spread the word that we were not involved. In the end, the client, the agency, and the people all got very satisfied and supportive. And I feel damn proud and happy for the team I work with, and for myself!
I think it’s important to find the line between bragging and celebrating, and in this case, it’s a small victory that we all can feel good about!
[EDIT:] One of my posts got retweeted nearly 3500 times!

In internet history, this is absolutely massive!
"I quit Twitter for a month and it completely changed my thinking about mostly everything."
I surprised some people when I said I was taking November off Twitter.
I’ve been using Twitter since July 2006 (user #1568!) with almost completely unbroken usage since late 2007, so that reaction is understandable—most especially from those in my life who consider me addicted to my iPhone.
…
Sadly, this is some of the stuff I can see online, when people look for job in the Digital Industry and/or Social Media. That’s not how it’s done, although an online presence is obviously A MUST!

"
“If you keep tweeting like you do, you’ll be unemployable.” That’s the advice cum low-level threat I received from a national newspaper journalist late last year. (…) But, in reality, Twitter and the connections I have made there have got me work. A lot of it.
[…]
The truth is, I think not using the web properly is what will make the old school hacks unemployable. When it happens, let’s all try not to laugh, OK?

This is another greatpiece by Mic Wright, in which he explains the differences in social media behaviors, and how -unlike what his former employer(s) had mentioned/said/threatened- using Twitter was much more beneficial than the handicap or good-enough-reason-to-get-fired his employer seemd to indicate at the time.
I obviously COMPLETELY agree!

Social Music, at a distance
I just discovered a new way to listen to Spotify: using the Soundrop plugin, you can listen to one of your playlists or a specific musical genre, and share it on Facebook, or through a link (which basically means on Twitter, by emails, etc…)
Your friends can then join, suggest and rate songs (higher rates will get higher in the queue)
There’s also a comment box so you can ‘chat’ with your friends and/or debate on the current and upcoming track. And the beauty of it is that it all happens within Spotify!
Thanks to Steph for the discovery!
